Casanova Brown, often referred to as Cass, is a somewhat timid and slightly awkward professor who finds himself in a complicated romantic predicament. The movie opens with Cass about to get married to a woman named Madge, but his world turns upside down when he receives a letter from a former lover, Isabel Drury.
The letter compels Cass to revisit his relationship with Isabel, prompting a flashback that reveals their whirlwind romance and subsequent marriage. Despite their passionate love, Isabel and Cass divorced due to misunderstandings and petty quarrels, mainly driven by their very different personalities – she being impulsive and fiery, and he being cautious and meticulous.
However, the letter reveals a secret Isabel has been keeping: she and Cass have a baby daughter. Cass, upon learning this, dashes to the hospital to see his child, causing him to forget his impending marriage to Madge. Chaos ensues as Cass tries to navigate his newfound fatherhood while still entangled in his feelings for Isabel.
In a comedic twist, Cass decides to “kidnap” his own daughter from the hospital, believing it to be in the child’s best interest. He takes refuge in a hotel, trying to care for the baby while navigating diaper changes and bottle feedings with comedic ineptitude. Meanwhile, Isabel is frantic, and when she discovers that Cass has taken their baby, she is furious yet also touched by his awkward attempts at fatherhood.
The film reaches its climax as the various parties – Isabel, Madge, and their respective families – collide in a comedy of errors. Cass’s clumsy attempts to care for his daughter endear him to Isabel, and they eventually reconcile, realizing that they still have feelings for each other.
“Casanova Brown” explores themes of love, commitment, and parenthood, all through a lens of lighthearted humor and classic romantic comedy tropes, offering audiences a charming and amusing cinematic experience.
