📌Plot Synopsis
The story revolves around two wealthy and highly intelligent law students in Chicago, Judd Steiner (played by Dean Stockwell) and Artie Straus (played by Bradford Dillman). These two believe they are intellectually superior to their peers and, influenced by Nietzsche’s ideas on supermen, decide to commit the “perfect crime” to prove their supposed superiority.
They meticulously plan and execute the kidnapping and murder of a young boy, leaving behind a pair of glasses as the only significant clue. They believe that their careful planning and intelligence will shield them from suspicion and capture.
However, as the police begin investigating the crime, the duo’s facade starts to crack. They make a few mistakes, and their strange behavior makes them subjects of suspicion. As the evidence mounts against them, the renowned defense attorney Jonathan Wilk (played by Orson Welles, based on the real-life figure Clarence Darrow) is hired to represent them.
The court trial forms a significant part of the film. Wilk argues against the death penalty, making a powerful and emotional plea on the basis that the boys, despite their heinous crimes, are victims of their upbringing and societal influences.
While “Compulsion” is a fictionalized account, it closely mirrors the real events of the Leopold and Loeb case, a notorious 1920s trial that questioned morality, the influence of philosophy on young minds, and the nature of evil. The film’s title reflects the idea that the two protagonists felt a “compulsion” to commit the crime, driven by their twisted intellectual beliefs and desire for notoriety.
